Free-range chicken

Bought a free-range chicken at a supermarket yesterday because the price was reduced. Actually it was the very first time I bought a free-range chicken. It's usually much more expensive and I always regarded it as rich people's food.

Made typical N Irish chicken and vegetable soup with the chicken. Surprised that not much fat came out of the bird while boiling. Considering that it was a chicken that could freely walked about outside during the daytime, it's natural, really. And the meat is firmer, too. All of us loved the soup for this evening's tea.

After watching many TV news showing chicken/turkey farms recently, didn't feel like buying chicken as much as used to. Am considering to buy free-range chicken only from now on. Surely it's better for more birds to be given a better quality of life. Being kept jam-packed in a shed and standing and sleeping on its dropping is not a decent life, you know. I shouldn't make a creature to endure such appaling living condition just because I want to save money. It will hurt my purse to buying free-range chicken all the time, but we don't mind eating less meat, anyway. It will give this new idea a go.

  3. We only eat free range chicken. Yes, it's more expensive, but it's worth it (conscience, probably healthier etc.).
I'd rather have free range chicken and two vegetarian days than three days of battery chicken...

  4. Yes, Laerke, that's my idea, too. I don't need to eat meat everyday. I get chicken at a supermarket and other kinds of meat from a butcher who get supplies from local farms. Probably I should get free-range eggs as well.
