Made winter vegetable soup for today's tea (= evening meal). My wee one didn't like it very much, but my big girl loved it and she had a second helping! The recipe is from River Cottage Family Cookbook. I couldn't believe my eyes to see her eating the soup.
Why? Because the soup has cauliflower in it. My big girls hates the vegetable. And when she found one celeriac in the kitchen, she went "Ugh, ugly. I won't eat that". Yes, celeriac was in the soup, too. I told her about this while she was having the second bowlful. Of course she suddenly looked unhappy, but I told her to be happy for being able to enjoy eating those veggies.
So, a big big thank-you to Hugh and Fizz, who wrote the cookbook. I've made an apple tart, sag aloo, chocolate sauce from the book, and they were great. Simple but decent and wholesome. My kids even ate spinach in sag aloo without complaining! Miracle!! I recommend this book to anybody who love food and also have family. (It's also brilliant for people who want to do basic-but-not-boring home-cooking.)
I love cauliflower! Unfortunately I'm the only one in the household who does so...
ReplyDeleteCeleriac on the other hand... Yuck!
This was the first time I tasted celeriac. There was a hint of celery flavour was in the soup, which was surprisingly pleasant. Everything (potato, leek, celeriac, cauliflower, veggie stock, milk and cream) is blended, so if you don't like the texture of celeriac, it's worth making the soup. Or, just replace celeriac with celery!
ReplyDeleteIt's actually more complicated than that...
ReplyDeleteI can't stand celeriac and I'm allergic to celery :-)
However, a few leaves of chopped fresh lovage (Levisticum officinale) gives a pleasant, mild celery-like taste...
Get one for your garden - they grow and grow and grow upwards, and die back every winter. Comes back in spring. Mine was taller than me this autumn...
I see, now I understand:)
ReplyDeleteI was wondering what kinds of herbs I should plant in a flowerbed in the back garden this year. My big girl doesn't like the texture of celery very much. So, lovage will be one of them in the list then:)
