Kill her!!

We got a doll from my mother last week. She bought it recently and posted it to us. It is an interactive doll, which speaks, reacts to touches, etc. It's like a robot toddler, really.

Today, we got batteries for the doll and programmed the basic stuff such as date, time, time to sleep, time to wake up, etc. It works fine. But the problem is, it speaks in an incredibly babyish manner in a squeaky voice. Sometimes even I can't make out some words it says. Couldn't they make it speak bit clearer?

Frankly, I don't know why my mother sent this doll. We never asked her to send any. We never told her that we liked dolls. My kids don't understand Japanese, let alone the Japanese baby talk. And I don't like dolls. I never like to have one when I was a little girl. I'd rather have a train set and Power Ranger toys. And I hate cute, high-pitched squeaky voices... And it talks a lot about dreams it was supposed to have during the sleep. Oh, I can't stand this electronic cutie thingy!! I know cuteness is what many Japanese people love, but this is too much for me!! It made me feel like submerging the doll into water when it said "I'd like to have a bath. Bath is so comfy!"

  1. I've never liked dolls either (nor clowns, but that's another story).

And extreme cuteness only works for me in the case of baby animals. Other kinds of cuteness usually make me want to barf - so I feel with you.

At least your girls don't seem to like it either, so after a week, it'll probably just end up in a corner, right?

  2. Hi, Laeke!

Yes, I'm hoping and praying that the doll will end up in the bottom of my girls' toy box, never to be fished out again. But it's still early for them to lose interest...

The doll keeps talking about what kind of dreams she had during her sleep. I felt like shouting "Why the **** do you think I want to listen to your dreams! And it's about time you learn and speak properly!!!":))

Knowling this kind of cuteness is normal in Japan, I don't think I would go back to live there. Pity that the doll doesn't feel anything. Otherwise I would keep poking her big eyes until she shuts up for good!
